How Major Beat a Stomach Bug and Acid Reflux with a Natural Reset and the 80-10-10 Diet
How Major Recovered From a Stomach Bug and Acid Reflux, and Why the 80-10-10 Diet Is the Healthiest for Dogs
At K9 Prime Cuts, we believe a balanced, natural approach keeps dogs at their best. Our own boy Major has always thrived on an 80-10-10 diet. After a sudden stomach bug, his digestion became sensitive and he developed acid reflux. Bone was no longer tolerated for a short time. Here is the exact recovery plan we used, followed by a safe return to the healthiest 80-10-10 diet for dogs.
Step 1: Rebuild the Gut Microbiome
After stomach upset, dogs often experience a shift in gut bacteria. We supported Major’s microbiome with Probiotic Plus x100. This probiotic provides canine specific strains that help digestion, stool quality, and immune balance. To soothe his stomach during the acute phase, we also used Tree Barks 100 g to coat and calm the gut lining.
Step 2: Switch to a Bland, Bone Free Raw Diet
For two weeks we removed bone and fed gentle, easily digested proteins. This reduced irritation while keeping nutrition strong.
- Chicken breast
- Turkey mince
- White fish
Within days his reflux eased. Stools firmed up and appetite normalised.
Step 3: Support Recovery Naturally
We continued daily Probiotic Plus x100 throughout. Small amounts of Tree Barks 100 g were used only during the recovery phase for comfort. Once digestion stabilised fully, we removed Tree Barks and continued with the probiotic alone.
Step 4: Keep Hydration a Priority
Major had fresh filtered water available at all times. We also offered small servings of warm, bone free broth based on white fish or turkey to encourage fluid intake and gentle nourishment.
Step 5: Reintroduce Bone Gradually
After two weeks, with firm stools and no reflux, we reintroduced bone slowly.
- Begin with a very small amount of finely ground bone in one meal.
- Monitor comfort and stool quality for 24 to 48 hours.
- Increase gradually over five to seven days until back to normal portions.
Step 6: Return to the Full 80-10-10 Diet
The 80-10-10 diet is the healthiest and most biologically appropriate way to feed dogs. It provides a natural balance of nutrients that supports strong muscles, clean teeth, a healthy coat, and consistent digestion.
Simple transition plan:
- Days 1 to 3: 75% bland meat and 25% 80-10-10
- Days 4 to 6: 50% bland meat and 50% 80-10-10
- Day 7 onward: 100% 80-10-10
Continue daily Probiotic Plus x100 to maintain gut stability. Tree Barks is not needed once the gut is fully settled.
Major’s Outcome
Major is now back on his complete 80-10-10 diet with no reflux and excellent energy. His coat, condition, and stool quality are outstanding. This gentle reset confirmed our view that the 80-10-10 model suit dogs perfectly when handled with care.
When to Seek Veterinary Support
If reflux, vomiting, or loose stools persist despite these steps, speak with your vet. Ongoing signs can indicate gastritis, pancreatitis, inflammatory bowel disease, or food intolerance that needs investigation.
